The Town Office Sub Committee is charged with the duty of ensuring the best possible working conditions for the Clerk To The Council, an hospitable and presentable meeting place and point of contact for residents, official visitors and councillors alike, all under the banner of "Best Value".
Previously, as with some parish councils, the clerk was expected to devote a room in her own home to conduct council business, a situation that does not exist in most other professions.
As the scope and complexity of the Town Council has increased over the years, an office became necessary. We could not expect the clerk to accomodate filing cabinets and office machinery in her own home, nor could we expect her to open her home to councillors and members of the public.
